BONHAM, Texas (KTEN) — Roughly 400 boxes of food were distributed to serve nearly 1,000 North Texans Thursday morning at Feeding Fannin‘s weekly giveaway.
And those aren’t the only people the organization served this week. Volunteers said they fed around 300 people for dinner Tuesday night.
More than 160,000 pounds of food have been distributed since March, and the clients just keep coming, week after week.
“It’s great. We like speaking with them, and the elderly people get out,” said Tere Curtis, a Feeding Fannin board member.
But they said they noticed some of their elderly neighbors still don’t feel comfortable heading to the grocery store. Cindie Stone said she wanted to help her neighbor.
“This is my first time picking up for one of my elderly neighbors,” Stone said. “She’s not very mobile, and I know she’s in need.”
Some people in line picked up food for as many as nine families.
The need also continues as unemployment numbers remain slightly above average at 3.9 percent in Fannin County, 5 percent in Grayson County and 6 percent in Cooke County.
As the pandemic creeps toward the 10-month mark, this is just something volunteers said they have to do.
“It feels great. I love coming when I can,” said Feeding Fannin board members. “We want to make sure our neighbors have enough to eat. It’s kind of a responsibility. They can’t do it, so why not?”
Feeding Fannin distributes food every Thursday morning at the Bonham Armory from 9 to 11 a.m. They said Thanksgiving plans are still in the works.
